Smurfit Kappa in Piteå, Sweden, rents an extensive communications system from Celab to increase operational safety.

Smurfit Kappa aim to become a workplace free from accidents and incidents, resulting in a clear focus on increasing safety at the facility. As a mean to reach this goal they have procured the new system.

Smurfit Kappa Kraftliner in Piteå is the largest paper mill of its kind in Europe. Kraftliner is a base paper extracted from virgin fibres and used in the manufacturing of high quality packaging solutions.

The new communications solution is built on Motorola’s proven TETRA architecture and has been designed with particular focus on safety and reliability. The technology offers high capacity and outstanding two-way radio performance as well as a range of safety features like emergency calls, announcements and call priority. For redundancy reasons the solution is equipped with two base stations eliminating a potential single point of failure and thereby further increasing reliability. Together with additional infrastructure indoors the solution provides sufficient signal strength throughout the entire area of operations.

Calls on the network are placed using a hundred or so portable and mobile Motorola TETRA terminals.

Smurfit Kappa have chosen to lease the entire solution over five years with an option for extension. With Celab now being a service provider it results in a very smooth and trouble-free use of the new equipment for Smurfit Kappa.

Celab also expect that the system’s capacity and streamlined communications will be able to contribute to Smurfit Kappa’s other important goal, continuous improvement.
